I think this is a pretty good article written by John Yesko.
To become the 44th President of the United States, president-elect Barack Obama essentially had to apply for the job, and then go through a vigorous interview (and background check) during which he had to convince his employers that in spite of race, religion, or creed, he was the best candidate for the job.

When friends and family ask me what I do for a living, I tell them "I figure out where all the links on websites should go to and why." I also tell them "I create blueprints for the information that will be on the website. They don't care to hear about user research, mental models, and taxonomies. I already tried that approach.
